San
Felipe Mexico on the California Baha.
The Baja California Peninsula is bordered by the United States on the north,
the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Golf of California - also
known as Sea of Cortez to the east. The Colorado River drains into
the ocean at the top of the gulf. Other rivers that also drain
into the guulf include Fuerte, Mayo, Sinaloa, Sonora and Yaqui.
The Sea of Cortez on the east side of the peninsula is much warmer water
than the Pacific Ocean on the west. This creates an expanded growing
cycle for fish and marine life. Before regulation controls, the
fish and shrimp were being depleted at an alarming rate by commercial
fishermen.
The California Baha is home to several tourist towns including San Felipe,
Auga de Las Flores, Loreto, La Paz, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.
Many other small fishing villages and town dot the coastline on
both sides of the peninsula.
